I can’t seem to find the chapter in which it happened, but there is a certain scene in Genshiken wherein Ogiue Chika explains to one of her friends (I can’t remember whom) that she is embarrassed about showing her manga to the world, because she is literally putting her fantasies onto the page. When someone reads her hardcore yaoi manga, they are reading exactly what she gets off on, and there is an obvious sense that if someone sees this and finds it disgusting, it only takes a little line-drawing to consider the artist equally disgusting.
I’m sure we are all familiar with the famous Genshiken scene in which Harunobu Madarame defends the idea of finding 2D girls attractive. This is a good explanation of how a man can find a 2D girl hot, but doesn’t really explain why. In the latest post by 2-D Teleidoscope, he talks about the fact that anime characters can be made to look exactly as we want our ideal girl to look, and therefor are a far more potent vehicle for our fantasies.
One of the greatest sins of my blogging career has been that I’ve never properly posted about Hidamari Sketch (and similarly, one of the greatest sins of my anime-watching career has been that I never watched any of it past the first season/read more than 1 volume of the manga) – Both of those in spite of considering it one of my alltime favorite anime, it having formally introduced me to favorite director Akiyuki Shinbo, and it being a large part of re-introducing me to anime. Well, you know what they say, the early bird catches the worm – I kept my mouth closed so long that someone else spoke out before me, and boy, I’m actually glad that I never said anything, because 8c knocked it out of the park!
The first decade of the formerly-new millennium is coming to a close, so it’s natural that everyone wants to have a go at recollecting it. The biggest trend so far has been talking about some of your favorite, or otherwise all of the noteworthy shows you saw this decade. I thought about doing that, but I realized there was a bigger fish to fry. I’m not just going to talk about some shows I liked – instead, what I have done is compiled a list of every single worthwhile anime of the past decade. I will now take a few paragraphs to explain to you how this was possible.
Are you enjoying the time of “100 Characters For 100 Otaku?” We’ve come a long way, but there’s still a lot more to come! As we wind down, I reflet on shows that have had a character in the beginning, those who have had consistent characters in the list, and those that have yet to arrive. If you’re wondering where someone is, don’t worry – they may be on the way! Now, let’s see what 45 down through 41 have to offer!
It’s time for more “100 Characters For 100 Otaku!” You know the drill – I talk about my top 100 characters and why I like them, how they are a mirror for the nature of otaku, how they reflect my otakudom, and how they parallel the first episode of Crest of the Stars. It’s a long, strange, and epic trip, and I hope you are enjoying it as much as I am! Today we have numbers 80 down through 76, so let’s see what they’re made of!
Ghostlightning did a post yesterday on shows that he finds difficult to write about in spite of the fact that he is a huge fan of them. I have shows like this myself as well as shows I just… never really brought up, even though I enjoyed them so much. Looking back, I didn’t used to really talk about shows much after the initial ‘I finished it’ post, and it was really only near the end of last year that I started not only to post about my impressions upon completion, but to really offer up discussion and thoughts on the show. That said, there are still shows I just never managed to mention.
