I think it’s becoming increasingly true that people are not as willing to suspend their beliefs as they used to be. Modern movies all have this forced sense of ‘realism’ and we pump as much power into our CG and effects as possible to create something more believable. When something is produced that doesn’t look realistic, it is now considered ‘poorly made’. I have a lot of fun looking back at movies that came out in the 80s and 90s that were completely ridiculous and in no way believable, but were awesome for that very reason. I think there is a mistake being made by modern filmmakers who are too dead-set on realism (or maybe it’s more a fault of the audience demanding it), which is that they think they have to be realistic. In truth, realism and abreality are just two means to the same end and should only be considered in the name of style. Let me show you what I mean using episode 1 of Futago Hime.

The first episode of Kampfer is great – a load of fun, a casserole of laughs, at least one or two kinds of badass, easily the best Nomad production since Rozen Maiden, and part of the growing yuri trend in anime. That said, let’s admit the truth: this is a show about female domination. It goes beyond just having a mostly-female cast and plenty of fanservice – this show is putting an effort into placing the pussy on a pedastal that the male gender is far too weak to reach. The recently released remastered edition of Revolutionary Girl Utena has been subbed and is being torrented by hundreds as we speak. What better reason does the blogosphere need to engage in a massive series-viewing? Utena is one of the favorite anime of virtually everyone who’s seen it, and is only waiting to entertain everyone who has yet to do so. Love Utena? It’s time for a rewatch! Haven’t seen it? Now’s your chance! Utena has been the starting point for no shortage of brilliant posts on all kinds of blogs, but the talk of it is sporadic and uncommon. This is as good a chance as we’ll get for those of you who’ve wanted to discuss the show for a long time to do so with relevance, and for new fans to mingle in and get acquainted! The new season of Entourage has begun! This episode sets things in motion for a season that appears to be setting all of the characters on separate paths, possibly threatening the entourage itself! But I believe this is a show about a band of brothers first and foremost, so we’ll see how things play out! Fight Ippatsu! Juuden-chan is a pure fanservice comedy anime with a style similar to the likes of Macademi WAsshoi, Moetan, Asu no Yoichi, or Kanokon. That said, it is very aware of itself as such, and for being what it is, does a satisfying job of good, fun entertainment for those of us with lower standards. On the surface (no pun intended) Umi Monogatari looked like an Aria spin-off almost. For obvious starters, it’s directed by Junichi Sato (Aria), has some focus on beautiful background art (Shichiro Kobayashi is art director and he’s definitely one of the best), has quiet, soulful piano songs by composer Ken Muramatsu, and some extremely familiar character personalities. However, Umi Monogatari seems to be hiding a slightly darker card up it’s sleeve. This post is written by a person who has seen this show nearly 10 times over 6 years. Because I have no real concept of what it would be like to be watching this show for the first time, I am going to write assuming that the reader has already seen the whole series once. It will probably help your understanding a lot as well if you rewatch the show before reading these posts. |
