I’m gonna be segmenting my Otakon coverage, partly because the thing as a whole is so massive, and partly because I want the sense of accomplishment from writing an Otakon post tonight without the incredible amount of work it’d take to do it all at once. So first up, I’ll start with the easy stuff: my haul.
It’s been a while since I did one of these. When I started this blog I did them rather seriously, and then I gradually made them sillier until I stopped altogether. This was mostly because I didn’t like most of the season previews I read, but the sensible thing to do would’ve been produce one that I did like so that people who feel the way I do have a preview post. I think that my wide knowledge of anime production and my very optimistic outlook on upcoming shows are something that the blogosphere is sparse on, so rather than whine about it, I should become the change that I want to see. Thus, here’s my summer 2010 season preview.
The month ends tomorrow? Too bad, I’m ending it now. Enough February. Let’s have us some March! It’s the Nuttbladder thing again, which went well I guess last month. That time I talked about some currently airing shows. I haven’t watched but one of those in February, which was Sora no Woto. Yikes. First, let’s talk about some peculiar things.
As long as I’m going around calling myself the ‘otaku gonzo journalist’ or whatever, I might as well write about some actual gonzo experiences. If you were going to tell someone what ‘life as an otaku is like’ it’d be pretty easy to just say ‘well, you’ll spend a lot of time alone in your room doing a lot of nothing.’ However, it’s not like otakudom doesn’t effect people in unique ways as well, so I’ll be sharing a little bit of that with you. I’ve been trying to keep a dream diary anyway, so now I’ll recount the dream I had last night about Strike Witches, which was probably one of the best dreams I’ve ever had (which isn’t saying much because 99% of my dreams are horrifying nightmares, but whatever.)
The first decade of the formerly-new millennium is coming to a close, so it’s natural that everyone wants to have a go at recollecting it. The biggest trend so far has been talking about some of your favorite, or otherwise all of the noteworthy shows you saw this decade. I thought about doing that, but I realized there was a bigger fish to fry. I’m not just going to talk about some shows I liked – instead, what I have done is compiled a list of every single worthwhile anime of the past decade. I will now take a few paragraphs to explain to you how this was possible.
One doesn’t have to look hard to find that Sengoku Basara and Strike Witches have a lot in common. They are both historical period pieces that completely do away with any semblance of accuracy. Both are very straightforward shows that succeed on the strength of their production and the severity of their fanservice. That fanservice, a sort of nudity on the part of the entire show, is what I will now explore.
