December's Forty Fandoms - Part Three: Kazuya Nakai

Kazuya Nakai is a more recent addition to my list of fandoms, but a strong one nonetheless. Like most voice actors, I would have heard him in some roles before I knew who he was or really listened to voices at all, such as his roles as Karasu in Noein and as Mugen in Samurai Champloo (though in both cases I noted the character having a great voice, and the latter I want to rewatch for this reason) as well as his roll as Shizuka Doumeki in XxXHolic. My fandom of Nakai largely came to be when he was brought to my attention by No Name, who is also a big fan. Thanks to No Name I knew him as the ‘guy who played Zoro in One Piece,’ though I didn’t really come to know his voice until his awesome role as Date Masamune in Sengoku Basara.

December’s Forty Fandoms – Part One: Rie Kugimiya + Introduction

I think it would be rather difficult to trace my actual fandom of Rie Kugimiya. I would probably have first heard her as Nagi Sanzenin in Hayate no Gotoku and then as Touko Matsudaira in Maria-sama ga Miteru and Nene Kusagano in Potemayo, but I watched all three of those shows before I started really hearing the voices of shows I watched in Japanese, so I can’t remember anything about the performances (well, Nagi I can, but I’ve seen eps more recently, too.) I would have known about her from her roles as Louise and Shana, the latter of which was one of the early anime characters that I really became a big fan of, but I still can’t say I would have had a real opinion of her, even if I can remember her Shana voice somewhat.

Yukari Tamura and Mamiko Noto At Their Very Best – Voice Acting in Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel

But remember, while I have my complaints, both of these actresses have also played some of my favorite roles, because they also have their strengths. Noto sounds great when her shyness is a little more subdued or the character is more confident and she can display some truly impressive emotion (as she even does as Kotomi in Clannad). Tamura, meanwhile, just generally sounds better when she isn’t pushing the cutesy factor too much and is showing any kind of intense emotion, wherein she excels. These elements of their voices are what we get on full display in Twin Angel, which has them both in possibly my favorite roles from either of them.

Norio Wakamoto Destroys the World With “Manliness” – Screaming “Otaku” 05 – Comic

This one is pretty straightforward, for those who don’t know Norio Wakamoto, he is the greatest voice actor who ever lived, known especially for his deep voice and ability to say words extremely dragged out and manly sounding. This in particular is a reference to my favorite role by him as Gustav in Baccano! where he continually refers to his assistant, Carol, in an absurdly drawn-out fashion as “KYAAAARRRORU”. I’m trying to simplify the art a little (AS IF IT NEEDED TO BE MORE SIMPLE LOL) and make the joke more linear so that it’s easier to follow, since the last 2 comics were a little confusing I thought.

Seiyuu Performance Highlight: Norio Wakamoto as Mechazawa Shinichi and Ramen Shop Owner + Mika Kanai as Mechazawa Beta – Cromartie High School

Cromartie High School is a lot like a SHAFT production in that all of the money went to hiring a cast of immense talent leaving none for the animation, which is handled nicely by unique budget-cutting techniques. There are a number of vocal roles probably worth note, but none stands out like The Great Norio Wakamoto’s role as Mechazawa Shinichi.

My Favorite Seiyuu and Voice Roles

I’ve been interested in doing a highlight series on Seiyuu and voice rolls. I’ve only started getting into seiyuu in the past few months outside of a few favorites, and so I set out eventually to think of every voice roll that’s left an impact on me, identify the actor, and see what else they’ve done. So to kick off my highlights, here’s a list of all my favorite seiyuu and my favorite roles by them. If you know of any great performances, by these seiyuu or any other, that you think should be brought to my attention, please give me a heads-up in the comments. Note that roles I’m unaware of will exist even in shows I’ve seen, since I only started really listening to voices about a year ago.
