Digiboy's Character Database of Love - 1. Orihara Izaya & 2. Kuhouin Murasaki

Twice in the past, I’ve blogged extensive lists on my top 100 favorite anime characters, and I’ve regretted the decision to set that 100 limit for a while, partly because a favorite characters list is bound to transform every time I finish a show, and also because I love a lot more that 100 characters.

For eight months now, I’ve seen Chii of Oishii Anime run her ’365 Days of Anime Characters’ series, which is very admirable, even though I wouldn’t personally want to talk about characters that I dislike alongside those I love. I’ve also been jealous of Glothelegend’s character page on Eye Sedso, wherein he selects his favorite character from every anime that he’s watched and talks about them.

I can’t do what either of them have done, because I only want to do my favorite characters, and I want to do more than one per series. Of course, a post like this would get boring if I didn’t liven it up and innovate somehow, so I hope you’ll enjoy the formula I’ve come up with for these posts. I’m setting these posts to go up once a week, indefinitely.

Each post will contain two characters selected randomly off the top of my head. The numbers are just for archiving purposes. If you don’t know the character, you can click on their names to get some basic information.

The Step Between 'Favorites' and 'Obsessions'

I’m sure it happens to all of us – we watch an anime, and it completely bowls us over in it’s awesomeness. The show changes our perspective on how great anime can be and effects us on emotional and personal levels we may not have thought possible, etc. After watching a show like this, we might have to totally redo our favorites list just because this show rocked so hard, we have to wonder if the rest of our favorites deserve to compare, even if we can’t figure out if we can really put something above the shows that we’ve been obsessing over for years.

You Have an Undying Love For... What?!

In the past week or so, my cousin/roommate Funeral has gone on a massive Yuu Yuu Hakusho binge. Out of the blue, he decided that he wanted to finally complete the series and manga, and then proceeded to buy all four ‘seasons’ of the show and almost all of the books at once.

Damn pretty

Implications of a Like vs. Enjoy Conflict in Writing A Favorites List

This is a continuation of this post wherein I described how one can separately ‘like’ and ‘enjoy’ any given show. Some people pointed out that ‘like’ is a very horrible term to use here, however, the suggested term ‘respect’ does not fully convey what I’m getting at here, so bear with me. In the future, I will never use the word ‘like’ this way again, but for the purpose of this post, please assume that when I say ‘like’, I mean to say ‘something that meets one’s personal standards’, and that when I say ‘enjoy’ I mean ‘something that I was pleasured greatly by partaking in’ (think ‘sex’). That out of the way, I want to talk about what separately ‘liking’ and ‘enjoying’ something means for one’s (namely my) favorites list.

Getting Into The Bones of the Like vs. Enjoy Conflict – It Exists, You Have It

Yesterday, Ghostlightning did a post about how it’s possible for him to like a show that he did not enjoy, and to conversely enjoy a show that he did not like. I at first decried this as impossible for myself – after all, I’m known for not putting up with things I don’t enjoy – my enjoyment seems to be intrinsically tied to what I do or don’t like. However, I mulled around with the thought and realized that, holy shit, ‘like’ and ‘enjoy’ are two totally different things, and then I finally cracked open on something I’ve been fighting for a while. I’ve always hated the way that people often declare ‘their favorites’ as separate from what they consider ‘the best’ anime. And now I’ve stumbled on the real meaning of those dual-lists – it’s a difference between what you ‘like’ and what you ‘enjoy.’

200 (+) Anime Worth Taking With Us Into the Next Decade

The first decade of the formerly-new millennium is coming to a close, so it’s natural that everyone wants to have a go at recollecting it. The biggest trend so far has been talking about some of your favorite, or otherwise all of the noteworthy shows you saw this decade. I thought about doing that, but I realized there was a bigger fish to fry. I’m not just going to talk about some shows I liked – instead, what I have done is compiled a list of every single worthwhile anime of the past decade. I will now take a few paragraphs to explain to you how this was possible.

Favorites Lists, Guilty Pleasures, Branding, and ORE NO RUURU!

Evidently some kind of epic cross-blog discussion began. It starts on hontou ni, though perhaps it truly began months ago on We Remember Love? It spreads like wildfire through the blogosphere, with one post inadvertently being related, and somewhere between the post on FunBlog and the comments on Omonomono’s post, I see a revelation!
