Hello, and welcome to Fuzakenna! My name is (21st Century) Digital Boy – blogger, otaku, and not much else. I’d rather not talk about myself here – to learn about me, all you have to do is read my posts. I consider myself an ‘otaku gonzo journalist’. I attempt to portray everything from my distinct perspective as well as make myself as much the subject of my posts as what I talk about. In order for you to get a feel for what kind of posts I write, what things I like to talk about, and what my style is like, I have compiled a diverse selection of some of my favorite posts here. In the past 3 years, I have written over 750 posts, so this sample selection is only a taste of the whole, but I think it excellently portrays the nature of what you will find as you explore this blog. Also, be sure to check out the Diary of an Anime Lived and Don’t Fuck This Up pages to see my biggest, baddest blogging projects in action!

I am obsessed with listing. I have long considered the ultimate purpose of this blog to be for me to have an outlet to try and perfect my favorite anime list. The list will not truly be completed until I’ve watched and posted about hundreds of new anime, but until then I’ve put a lot of thought into how I go about creating my favorites list. My first major blogging project, The Epic Journey, which is currently being retooled, described the way that I had come to look at what constitutes a ‘favorite anime,’ and these two posts above are my favorite explorations of how my concept of a favorites list has evolved.
While I can’t say they make up a large amount of my library, some of my favorite posts to do on Fuzakenna are my own fan works. These run the gambit from fanfiction to videos to really shitty fanart, but nothing i’ve done quite compares to LUCKY MECHA: ULTIMATE WAR. It can only be described thusly: 5 Figmas. 4 Revoltechs. 1 Nirvash TypeZERO. A battle for the ages.
As an otaku trying to look inward at myself, and as a person who has a lot of experience in speaking to other otaku, I often seek to try and explain our actions that may otherwise go over even our own heads. In this post, I tried to explain why, exactly, it is that otaku develop a 2D complex, and how it can be considered a matter of preference rather than an oddity.
I have tried many times to blog anime episodically, and I am fairly confident that the posts written in my various attempts were all some of the best episodic posting around… which is why it’s a real shame that I never finish the series. FLCL remains the only series that I’ve ever episodically blogged all the way, and the epic post series reaching over 25,000 words total has received mountains of praise from many readers. Besides FLCL, my favorite episodic posts to write have been the ones I did for Sora no Woto, though I only blogged the first five episodes.
There are some odd trends and common mentalities in the greater anime fandom that leave myself and many others scratching their heads. I often seek answers as to why these things happen, not unlike the way that I attempt to explore the psychology of an otaku, but in cases like this one I am taking an outsider’s approach as someone who does not actually experience the phenomenon in question. In this case, I was trying to figure out why it is that when some characters are found to have had sex in their past, the fanbase will utterly discard the character as a ‘slut’, while other characters get away with it no problem.
Sometimes I get very seriously into my research of anime. I consider myself to be a ‘hound dog for creator’s intent’, and am always trying to figure out what sort of influences might have inspired the creation of my favorite series. This is one of my most well-researched posts, wherein I tried to follow back a century’s worth of influence on the only anime series easily classifiable as ‘film noir.’
In addition to my studies of the nature of otaku, I also try to look at the fandom as a whole and think about how the interactions between fans can enhance our individual fandoms. In this post, I talk about how it’s good not to limit yourself to talking to a small group of fellow fans, but to broaden your horizons and perhaps meet other people who can give you something fresh and exciting in your fandom.
Of course, while I can use some of my experiences to explain the psychology and inner-workings of otakudom, not everything that applies to me applies to everyone else. It’s not uncommon for my posts to be quite personal and, in some cases, for my views to be shared by very few. This case isn’t necessarily hard to agree with, but it is a case of explaining my perspective on anime worlds to try and gain some insight into my own thought process and, by extension, my own fandom.

I like to have some fun – not all of my posts seek to explain anime by it’s influence or subtext, but by tangentially-related subjects such as art history and business. These posts are just meant to offer an interesting and fun new way of looking at a series that you might not have thought of before. In the first post above, I looked into the Lovecraftian aspects of several light novel-based series, and in the second, I explored the similarities between Shin Mazinger’s style and that of the ancient epics such as the Ilyad.
I’ve experimented a lot with the way that I do end-series reviews over the years, and I still have not created a consistent formula. The formula that I had for this review was one I used for a while, however this was the most successful of those reviews, receiving lots of praise on MAL and elsewhere.
On some very, very rare occasions, I have actually done videos, either as posts, or as fun anime-related projects such as this video wherein I try to act like Takasu Ryuuji from Toradora. I would like to do more videos like this, but my family has a plague of bad luck with cameras hanging over our home.
As I mentioned before, I am truly obsessed with lists, and will at times do a top list of some random aspect of anime that I’ve been on the lookout for. I try to put as much effort into these lists as possible, and this particular one is among my favorites, as it is a specific list that I have not seen done elsewhere.
Reference and Terms Guide
For help with anime and otaku lingo, this guide on Anime News Network should be helpful.
History – This site was originally known as ‘Digital Boy’s Anime Bloggin’ because I am totally fucking unoriginal. I then named it ‘Euphoric Field’ after the song and general message of ef ~a tale of memories~. Then I bought a domain and changed the name to ‘Fuzakenna!’ which is my favorite Japanese word, used most frequently in the anime s-CRY-ed. My writing really sucked in the beginning and then gradually got better until I almost tanked in late 2008. However, I pulled the blog back around, had an amazing year in 2009, and am now on my way to the next level of blogging.
Funeral – Funeral is my cousin. The two of us got into anime together in 2003, but we both got out of it again. I was first to re-arrive at anime in 2007, and when the two of us were reunited in 2008, Funeral got back into anime as well. Funeral and I think on almost the exact same wavelength and share an almost disturbing amount of interests. The two of us have a lot of ambitions together, always including the other in our projects. Funeral is a very skilled drummer and a not very skilled artist. At the start of 2009, he moved in with me.
No Name - No name is my best friend and resident technician. Because of extreme medical conditions, No Name was exempt from school for several years before taking his GED. However, No Name is an incredible super-genius who knows pretty much everything. He can deal with just about any technical situation and has fixed the computers in my house so many times it’s embarrassing. No Name is a hikkikomori and his meeting me could only be called fate since it almost didn’t happen. Since he’s been at home for years, No Name has watched way more anime than anyone else, period. He was a major factor in making me the mega-otaku I am. The two of us often have very large marathons in very short time. In early posts, he is referred to by the name ‘Shin’. However, this got to be too confusing, so he stuck to just being known as ‘No Name’.
